Foreign scholars awarded Vietnamese literature prize

American historian David Marr and Japanese academic Yumio Sakurai received the Vietnamese Literature 2008 award presented by the Phan Chau Trinh Culture Fund in Hanoi Friday.

Professor Marr, who has been with the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies under the Australian National University since 1975, is the author of Vietnamese Tradition on Trial, 1920-1945, Vietnamese Anti-Colonialism, 1885-1925, and Vietnam 1945: the Quest for Power.

Professor Sakurai is now chairman of the Vietnamese Studies Association in Japan. He has also been awarded an Honorary Doctorate degree in science by the Hanoi National University for his research of the Bach Coc Village in the northern province of Nam Dinh.

The prize, presented annually by the Phan Chu Trinh Culture Fund, aims to encourage and award innovative research on social, historical and cultural issues in Vietnam.
