Notorious PMU18 directors wife hands over ill-gotten car

The estranged wife of a notorious official arrested for gambling away millions of state dollars and massive corruption in Vietnam handed over a car, probably bought with state funds, to the police Thursday.

Le Hai Van, wife of Bui Tien Dung, former director of the transport ministrys Project Management Unit 18 (PMU18), handed in the VND500 million ($31,250) Ford Mondeo.

Dung bought the car in 2003 but registered it under another persons name to avoid police queries.

However, he later gave it to his wife – who has been living apart for 10 years – and bought himself a Toyota Camry.

Police sources said initial evidence showed Dung had bought two mansions, worth nearly VND5 billion ($312,500), in Hanoi.

Dung was arrested this year for gambling away $2.6 million of state funds on football.

Initial investigations into the gambling later revealed massive corruption at PMU18.

A transport deputy minister was subsequently arrested, forcing the minister to tender his resignation.
